Use Scribe with AI agents

Let Claude, Codex and other AI agents read your meetings, notes and dictation history from your Mac. Read-only, local, and nothing to install.

Mac only.

What this is

Scribe ships a small command line tool called scribe. It reads your meetings, notes and dictation history and prints them, so an AI agent can answer questions like “what did we decide in Tuesday’s meeting?”

It is read-only. It never records, never starts a model, never connects to the network and never changes a file. It opens Scribe’s own files on this Mac and nothing else. Scribe does not need to be running.

Find the tool

The tool is inside the app, so there is nothing to install. Open Settings › General and scroll to Use with AI agents. Command line shows the path, with Copy path next to it. It looks like this:

/Applications/NanthAi Scribe.app/Contents/MacOS/scribe

The examples below use scribe for short. Use the full path, or put it on your PATH:

ln -s "/Applications/NanthAi Scribe.app/Contents/MacOS/scribe" /usr/local/bin/scribe

Commands

Every command takes --json for machine-readable output. Without it you get plain text, or Markdown for a meeting.

scribe history --since 3d --app Mail --grep invoice
scribe meetings list --since 7d
scribe meetings show latest --md
scribe meetings search "launch date"
scribe notes list
scribe notes show latest
scribe notes search "shopping"
  • scribe history lists your recent dictations, newest first. Filter with --since, --until, --app (the whole app name, any case) and --grep (a case-insensitive substring). --limit defaults to 50. --raw adds the original text of edited dictations.
  • scribe meetings list shows meetings with an id, date, length and title. --limit defaults to 20.
  • scribe meetings show takes an id, the first 6 or more characters of one, or latest. It prints the title, date, summary, action items and the transcript with speakers and mm:ss offsets. Add --md for Markdown or --json for data.
  • scribe meetings search finds meetings where a transcript passage, title or summary contains every word of your query. Each hit has the meeting id, the mm:ss offset and a one-line excerpt.
  • scribe notes works the same way for notes you wrote, pinned, edited or kept.

A time can be 3d, 36h, 2w, today, yesterday, a date like 2026-10-30 or a date and time like 2026-10-30T14:00. A date or a day name covers that whole day.

Keep history in Settings still applies. With history Off, scribe history returns nothing; with 1 day or 30 days it returns only what Scribe still keeps.

Exit codes: 0 for success, 1 when nothing matches or the request is wrong, 2 when Scribe’s files cannot be read.

Connect an agent with MCP

scribe mcp runs a Model Context Protocol server over standard input and output. Agents that speak MCP can then call these tools: list_meetings, get_meeting, search_meetings, search_history, list_notes and get_note. Every tool is read-only.

In Settings › General › Use with AI agents, Copy MCP config and Copy Claude Code command put the right text on your clipboard with the correct path filled in.

Claude Code

Run the copied command:

claude mcp add scribe -- "/Applications/NanthAi Scribe.app/Contents/MacOS/scribe" mcp

Claude Desktop

Open Settings › Developer › Edit Config and add Scribe to mcpServers, then restart Claude Desktop:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "scribe": {
      "command": "/Applications/NanthAi Scribe.app/Contents/MacOS/scribe",
      "args": ["mcp"]
    }
  }
}

Codex

Add this to ~/.codex/config.toml:

[mcp_servers.scribe]
command = "/Applications/NanthAi Scribe.app/Contents/MacOS/scribe"
args = ["mcp"]

Other MCP clients take the same command and mcp argument.

Privacy

  • Scribe itself sends nothing. The tool reads local files and never connects to the network.
  • The agent is a separate program. What it reads goes to its provider under that provider’s terms.
  • To stop access, remove the entry from the agent’s configuration. Scribe keeps no connection open.
  • Meetings you recorded remain subject to the consent you needed to record them. Think before you let an agent read other people’s words.

Common problems

“No such file” or “command not found”. Use the full path from Settings, or move the app to Applications first. If you moved the app, copy the path again.

An agent shows no tools. Restart the agent after changing its configuration, and check that the path is right by running scribe --version in Terminal.

scribe history is empty. Check Keep history in Settings › History & Privacy. With Off, nothing is saved.
