Swipe typing
Slide across the letters to type a word, pick an alternative from the bar, and delete a swiped word in one tap.
iPhone only.
Swipe a word
- On the letter keyboard, put your finger on the first letter.
- Slide through the other letters without lifting. A trail follows your finger.
- Lift. The word is inserted with a space after it.
The suggestion bar shows the swiped word in the middle and two alternatives either side; tap one to replace the word. Typing punctuation straight after a swipe removes the extra space first.
Undo a swipe
Tap Delete straight after a swipe to remove the whole word, not just the last letter.
Languages
Swipe uses a bundled word list for each of your enabled languages, plus your own Dictionary words. Word lists are bundled for all 34 autocorrect languages (see The keyboard). Languages without a word list still work by tapping.
Turn it off
Settings › Keyboard › Swipe to type. With it off, sliding across the keys does nothing and taps work as before.
Common problems
The wrong word keeps coming out. Lift between words, and start and end on the right letters; the middle of the path matters less. Add names to your Dictionary so they can be swiped.
No trail appears. Swipe to type is off, or the keyboard is on a layer without letters.
